Drug Abusers Becoming Cheese Thieves
ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. - A black market for cheese is developing in St. John's, Nfld., as drug abusers find ways to support their addiction, police say.
Staff Sgt. June Layden says a man who threatened to stab people with a hypodermic needle in the parking lot of a supermarket earlier this week was holding between 12 and 16 blocks of cheese when he was arrested.
Robert Kourrie, the owner of Big Bite Pizza in Churchill Square, says about $200 worth of cheese was taken from his shop. "We had a break-in here, and yeah, I think we had a case or 10 blocks [stolen]."
[full story at cbc.ca] All I can picture is while a drug deal is going down, the briefcase opens, not to reveal cash, but cheese! Blocks and blocks of cheese!

Pluot
When I was shopping for fruit at the Co-Op, I picked up a couple of these things I never heard of before. And the first thing I do when I find a new fruit is to look it up on the internet.
Pluot (pronounced PLOO-awt) was created by Zaiger's Genetics in a controlled cross-breeding environment. The Californian fruit is approximately 2/3 plum and 1/3 apricot. The Pluot was first sold commercially in in 1989 and there are approximately 25 varieties. The particular type I had purchased was the Flavour King, pictured here. I was amazed at how delicious it was! The fruit was a beautiful burgundy red, it was sweet, flavourful, incredibly juicy and refreshing. I sat here raving about the fruit constantly as I devoured each delicious morsel. Hurray for hybrid fruit!
Pluot links: A nice history of Pluot and a couple of recipes. List of a few Pluots and Apriums with pictures. Brief description and a variety lilst.

Cape Gooseberries = Chinese Lanterns
I found a really good website that sells tropical fruit seeds called Trade Winds Fruit. What I love about them is their extensive database on plants. I was reading through their database and I came across the Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana). I remember back in the spring debating buying seeds for this plant, since I had read it is like a sweet cherry tomato. Then at some point between remembering what I read in the spring and what I read the other night, I realized that the Cape Gooseberry might be the same plant as the Chinese Lantern. I went to FoodSubs.com and find the entry for Cape Gooseberries:
Cape gooseberry = Chinese lantern = physalis = golden gooseberry = alkekengi = strawberry tomato = ground cherry = husk tomato = golden berry = golden husk = poha Notes: Like its relative the tomatillo, the Cape gooseberry is covered with a papery husk. The fruit inside looks a bit like a yellow cherry, and tastes like a sweet tomato. You can eat Cape gooseberries whole, minus the husk, or use them to make very tasty preserves. They're hard to find in the United States; your best bet is a specialty produce market in the spring. Substitutes: tomatillos OR gooseberries OR cherry tomatoes. You know what? For bloody years my mom has had Chinese Lanterns growing in her yard. Even in our cold climate, they grow well as a perennial. Chinese Lanterns are a papery like flower that hangs down and are quite decorative. I had no idea that inside was a delicious little tomatillo. How many years of berry eating have I missed? Woe is me.

You Know What Sucks?
Urinary tract infections.
I realized I had one at about 6pm. I was debating going to the emergency ward or waiting to go to the clinic the next day. By 7, I decided to go to the Hospital. BEST DECISION EVER! I was in and out of there in about a half hour, got a prescription and I already feel a bit better. Hurray modern medicine!
